What a great place to stay in Bar Harbor. This quiet, beautiful, clean and tastefully decorated B&B right in the heart of town is the perfect place to rest your head. Spend some quiet time in the sunny front room or enjoy fresh cookies and milk in the parlor. The breakfast is amazing and the owners, Terry and Jeff, are a great local resource for places to eat or things to do. The rooms are lovely and my favorite- happy hour wine and snacks every evening. I would highly recommend and will definitely go back.

We stayed at at the Bass Cottage Inn for five nights in Mid-October. Jeff and Teri (as well as the other staff) were very welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable about the area's attractions. The room was comfortable and was always kept clean by the staff. The breakfasts were an amazing way to start out our days of hiking Acadia, going out into the bay, or exploring the town of Bar Harbor. The location was excellent as a launch off into whatever our plans were for the day or night.

We booked the Bass Cottage Inn for our four day stay in Bar Harbor on the recommendation of a friend. When we arrived a bit earlier than check-in, Jeffrey met us at the door and made a fantastic lunch suggestion (Side Street Cafe), guaranteeing that check-in would be ready when we returned. Upon returning from lunch, we were greeted by Greg, who gave us a tour of the Inn and shared its history, checked us in, and led us up to our comfortable room, #5. Although it's one of the smaller rooms in the inn, it felt very comfortable and not at all cramped. The styling in the room was very well thought out- New England, coastal, fresh and crisp. We took full advantage of all the wonderful amenities in the Inn, including the 24/7 pantry where we enjoyed complimentary coffee and fresh baked goods (the orange bars are amazing!), the relaxing adirondack chairs they have in the backyard (the perfect place to read with a glass of wine), and the amazing breakfast they offer every morning (come down to the table hungry, as your expectations will be exceeded). We enjoyed talking with Jeffrey and Greg throughout our visit, getting recommendations on places to eat (Greg smartly recommended the Mache Bistro for our dinner the final night we were there - it was one of the the best meals of our trip), talking with Jeffrey about their travels and Maine. I wish we would have had the chance to meet Teri, but we greatly enjoyed her cooking the evening we dined at the Inn's restaurant, 10 Tables. It was fine dining, but felt comfortable and not stuffy in the least. With its great location in the middle of town, but tucked back where it's a little quieter, I wouldn't hesitate to stay at the Bass Cottage Inn the next time I'm on Mt. Desert Island.

It's not hard to see why Bass Cottage has such glowing reviews. Our five-night stay there was completely comfortable. Pair that with a stellar location, and good food (my favorite part of a B&B!), and you have a solid choice for your Bar Harbor vacation. ACCOMMODATIONS The structure is beautiful, several stories, well-decorated, and impeccably kept. Our room, #6 -- on the 2nd floor -- was perfect with its coastal theme, and large bathroom. If I had a gripe it would be that the room stayed warmer than my husband liked (despite the ceiling fan), and that the shower was teeny-tiny. But the soaking tub made up for it, and was a welcome retreat after several long hikes. The location is excellent: it's on a private street, tucked back from the hustle and bustle of the village; but is still steps away from all the action, and the water. There are several common rooms, appropriate for lounging or playing board games. Wish the game selection had been stronger, but the DVD library was quite diverse. The grand piano is available to guests, and the afternoon I sat down to tickle the keys, the staff kindly turned off the house music. The butler's pantry is awesome -- tea, coffee, water available all day. Space in the refrigerator for your own wine, etc. And a selection of yummy baked goods changed each day we were there. There's also free wifi, that was plenty fast and reliable for me to handle work. FOOD The breakfasts always included a double-stacked muffin, choice of juice (the cranberry-orange blend is great!), and an entree -- either a healthy yogurt & fruit option, or a featured dish. We enjoyed fruit pancakes, huevos rancheros, and the salmon dish the most. Portions are hearty, and fueled us well on our vacation adventures. We have been to many B&Bs that enforce communal dining, and I found it refreshing to be dispersed at two-tops, and allowed private conversation, instead. STAFF The gals who took care of us at breakfast were very sweet, and provided great service. Similarly, our interactions with the front desk were good. I've read some reviews that find the owners distant, and I can see how folks might get that impression just because they allow their guests a great deal of personal space. However, when we wanted recommendations on restaurants or trails, they were happy to oblige.

This place sets the standard for a wonderful five star bed & breakfast. The staff is welcoming and helpful, and one wonderful accommodation that makes you feel like home is the 24/7 pantry with coffee, tea, sodas, water, fruit, fresh-baked cookies... Not to mention the wonderful gourmet breakfast every morning! The owners go out of their way to make sure you have the perfect day with advice on restaurants, touring, hiking, shopping, etc. At 6 PM, they put out wine and light hors d'oeuvres... And it seems everyone visiting gets together to share. A wonderful experience!

A terrific B&B. The rooms are nice, the food is terrific, the atmosphere is social, and the price was very competitive. Bass Cottage has a perfect location too. The owner is quite guest-centric and helpful. Hopefully we'll be back soon.

My husband and I stayed here for a portion of our honeymoon. The room was lovely and accommodating, but the vibe was less than welcoming. We obviously didn't fit the east coast fancy-shmancy culture. Being exhausted from our traveling, we slept in most days because it's, we'll, vacation. Because of this, our rooms were never serviced or offered to be serviced once. I couldn't believe it. Customer service was insincere and lazy. Really bummed, as we had high expectations from other reviews.

Amazing!! We went to Bar Harbor for 2 nights to attend our friends wedding that took place at the Bar Harbor Inn. The Bass Cottage Inn exceeded all expectations I had for this stay. This was my first time in Bar Harbor, and I will definitely be back. Our check-in went great, the worker took us up to our room. We stayed in room 7, which is known to be the "most romantic room in the house." The Inn had a very comfortable, cozy feeling. With all antique furniture in the lobby, library, and in the rooms. The main floor was very warm, but the temperature was 40 degrees, so it was to be expected. All room had in room air conditioning. The breakfast was phenomenal!!! It was a served 3 course breakfast! The food was incredible and the service just as great! The Inn also had a "wine hour" and a "guest pantry". In the pantry there was a cooler with water, cans of pop, juice, coffee and tea, AND a pastry of the day. The day we arrived there was homemade chocolate cookies, which were amazing. The second day there was double chocolate, mint cookies, which were also amazing! The room we stayed in was very bright and sunny, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. The price of the room was $230, which was competitive for the area. This is a little gem! This was right downtown, overlooking the water, and a little hidden on a rock shore path. LOVED IT!

After searching high and low for a B&B in Bar Harbor area that is updated, fresh, bright, cheerful, with just the right balance of new amenities and old charm, we hit the jackpot with Bass Cottage Inn! I'm in the interior Design field and they have not missed one detail! We are an active couple that rarely stays inside if there are mountains to climb and exploring to be done...but this Inn makes it very tempting to ease back in one of its many common areas with a good book and just breathe. The staff is friendly, helpful, and respectful of the individual needs of its guests. The breakfast experience was absolutely delicious and a great opportunity to chit chat with the Innkeepers and learn a little more history of the area and the Inn itself. Don't miss out on this memory!

True gem in the heart of town. We received a warm welcome upon arrival & were given the option of receiving a tour about its history along with FAQs of Bar Harbor. Our room was #8 and although on the smaller side (and thus less expensive) this was overlooked as a result of the room quality. The owners have given attention to every detail. The furnishings, linens, bathroom amenities were all very nicely done. The main house had been updated while maintaining its charm. A nice pantry was stocked with water, sodas, coffee, tea & freshly baked goods. A gourmet breakfast was offered with usually 3 different options to choose from. That being said, the kitchen accommodated each morning to my dietary restrictions & customized my meal. The evening wine hour was also accompanied by a creative dish. Jim & Teri were available each morning to offer suggestions for planning the day. The Inn also offers a wide selection of DVDs, books, magazines & board games which can be used in various areas of the main house or in your room. Lastly, the location can't be beat. The Inn offers parking & is walking distance to all the restaurants & shops as well as the water. Would definitely recommend & revisit!

Once my (now) wife and I decided to head to Bar Harbor for our honeymoon in October, the Bass Cottage Inn very quickly caught our eyes. After seeing many positive reviews, we went ahead and booked a room to make sure we got a spot. In short, we were definitely not disappointed! The assistant innkeeper, Susan, called to make sure we were ok when our flight was a little later than intended, and we pretty much felt spoiled from them on. She helped up take our bags to our room, which was at the very top of the house, after which we got settled in. The breakfast the next morning (and every morning after that), was nothing short of amazing. The coffee was good (and we're quite picky about coffee), the juice was good, and oh my gosh the food was good. It's a wonder I didn't gain 20 pounds while we were there. Beyond that, Jeff and Teri were helpful in every way possible, offering to help find things to do, tell us what food in the area was good, even helping us conquer our fear of eating a whole lobster! The snacks that constantly stocked the guest pantry were always amazing, and having coffee, tea, and hot chocolate available all the time was amazing (if a bit dangerous). There's even a closet full of movies to pick from! The room itself was amazing. It was stocked with everything we could want, including a nice pitcher of fresh iced water. The bed was insanely comfortable, and the bathroom was quite nice with a cool sort of classic charm to it. Sure, the TV is a bit small, but who wants to watch TV when you have that amazing harbor out the window? They even randomly left a nice vase of flowers in our room while we were out one afternoon! I could honestly ramble about the awesomeness of our stay at the Bass Cottage all day, but I won't waste any more of your time. Just go stay here and find out for yourselves!

Had a great stay in September. What a beautiful Inn, fully restored to it's original luster. This place was built in 1885 in the "golden age" of Bar Harbor by the Bass family for there summer cottage. Five star accommodations, food, and service... every room has immaculate decor, all the furnishings and antiques are beautiful. Every bedroom is uniquely decorated and the bathrooms have all the modern conveniences. All the common areas are impeccable. The pantry always had fresh coffee and tea with cookies and desserts laid out all day and night. The cocktail hour with red and white wine and hor d'oeuvres every night was a much needed relaxer from a full day of activities. I can't even begin to discribe the breakfast, one word comes to mind "phenomenal" Two different selections to choose from every morning with fresh baked scones and pastries. Teri and her staff outdo themselves each and every morning! Thanks too, Jeff & Teri and the whole staff for all your hospitality!!! Will definitely be back...

It's an 11 out of 10! Jeff and Terri (the owners) always make the stay AND the "sweet or savory" breakfast something to remember. If you are on a journey to collect memories in life... you have to stay the night... its a MUST! And Susan...never misses a beat on the complimentary wine and cheese social hour with the guests...thanks Susan.
